hISTORICAL sIGNIFICANCE THEN AND TODAY
Back in its time, Ghana was in the center of the Trans- Saharan trade route. It was one of the main gold providers, and one of the first West African empires to thrive. Ghana had plenty of cities centred in trade, and saw plenty of people from "far away" lands. When new gold mines were found in other Empires, and trade routes changed, Ghana slowly began to decline and was unfortunately wiped out around the year 1235. Ancient Ghana thrived for a very long time, and ruled vast amount of land during its time. It was looked up to amongst other African Empires, and was the center of trade.
When Modern Day Ghana gained its independence, they took their name from the famous Ancient Empire. Many people think that these two countries are the same, however they are very seperate. Today there are still groups with ancestors who lived in Ancient Ghana, mainly known as the Soink and Dyula people. They have shared mirgration stories from around the time of Ghana's descent. Today Ancient Ghana is known for its flourishing wealth and prosperity, and is greatly looked upon by many people around the world.
